Macramé Square Knot

Most people are familiar with this knot.  When tied "right over left, left over right" it produces a flat knot.  when it is tied "right over left, right over left, etc" it produces a round knot (spiral).  Popular in all oriental knotting and our macramé it is a good foundation for many projects.

A. Twist: The knot can become unruly if the twist is very unbalanced and a long combination of this knot is being used.  If a short combination is used it is not necessary that the knot be balanced.  the cord does not have a tendency to split with this knot.

B. Density:  Hard cords are most suitable for all knots but even light, soft cords can be used for this knot.  Just do not tighten too much.

C. Fibers:  Angora is the only fiber I would absolutely not use for this knot.  All other fibers should be passable if spun with enough twist and hard density, even alpaca and dog hair.

D. Textures:  Textured yarns are completely acceptable for this knot.  They will give most unique results (sample).

E. Wheel Requirements:  Use any wheel suitable for the diameter and desired twist on the cord or yarn.  even the finest threads are suitable for this knot.
