Sample #15, 3-ply linen, is exemplary for Chinese Knotting.
The yarn is smooth enough to show clarity in the knots. It is sufficiently
pliable to make the complicated turns and not abrade. Yet, it is adequately dense
not to compact and have the knots disappear. Also importantly, the yarn does not
unply as it is knotted.
The ornament is started with a Ju I knot, a copper enameled bead
is added, then a butterfly pan chang is added. Flowing another bead is a long pan
chang, another bead and finally a stone chime knot. The ornament is finished with a
traditional tassel. This arrangement of knots would be used as bell pulls in the
Orient.
To care for the ornament, wash in mild detergent in hot water.
Blot out any excess water and dry flat, pinned in the correct position. It is
acceptable to bleach the linen if stained and spray starch the ornament to return some of
the original character.
