Sample #27
Fiber:  Wool
Weight of Skein:  60 grams

Appl: #1600203
Type: Scottish Blackface Rovings
Length: 34 Yards

Spinning Equipment Used: Turkish Drop Spindle
Direction of Twist:  Z
# of Plies: 1
Finishing:  The yarn was washed, blocked and steam set with a hand held steamer.
Yarn Description:  This yarn is a very course, softly spun bulky yarn.  The spindle was rather heavy and called for making a thick yarn.  This Scottish Blackface has the attributes for a bulky yarn and the roving drew out easily.   With much kemp in the fleece, the texture adds interest to a simple yarn.
Uses:  This yarn is best used for weft.  Use it for texture in tapestries and wall hangings.  Used as novelty weft in a heavy woven coat would be interesting.  I think a heavy bound weave pillows would be nice out of this yarn.

Preparation for Spinning: None, the roving was ready to spin.

Reason for Choice of this Sample:  The open roving spun easily on the drop spindle.  It was clean and had unique texture.  Usually this is not the type of wool I like to work with. But, I used this opportunity to play with other fibers and wools.  Now I can't wait to spin some more and weave a rug.
