Preliminary Work

Before I could begin to understand the necessary components of a good knotting cord, I had to learn to knot. Furthermore, I needed to learn how each knot treated a cord.  Did the knot add twist as it was tied?   Did the knot abraid the cord as it was tied?  Did the knot hold its shape?
To gain this experience, I enrolled in a Chinese Knot class at Torrance Adult School.  The instructor started the students on the most basic knots and gradually presented more complex knots.  A side effect I found was that knotting is very good for arthritic hands.
