Sample #12
Fiber:  Flax
Weight of Skein:  60 grams

Appl: #1600203
Type: Line linen (strict)
Length: 124 Yards

Spinning Equipment Used: Flyer Wheel, Ratio 16:1|
Direction of Twist:  Z
# of Plies: 1
Finishing:  This yarn was washed in very hot, soapy water with much agitation.  The water was changed many times, it took a number of washings for the water to run clear when rinsing.  The yarn was reeled on a yarn blocker while still wet.  Extra moister was squeezed out between my fingers as it was reeled.  When it was dry it was removed from the blocker.  Even though it is still stiff, there is not sizing in the yarn.  It will become more supple as it is used in the future in a finished state.
Technique:  The fiber was spun with one hand controlling twist and diameter and the other hand was used to keep everything wet.  The fiber was misted and a wet sponge was on hand for keeping the fingers moist.  The towel kept appropriate tension on the long fibers.  The flax was spun from the flower end.
Uses:  Use this thread for warp and weft and make table runners, placemats and other household items, it is durable, washable and the luster will come with use.  I would like a set of placemats out this sample with overshot at the ends. For a very unique jacket, weave tabby using this for some of the warp and finer linen for the rest of the warp along with a similar weft.  The design would be in the placement of the heavier linen.  Wash the fabric vigorously a few times before sewing the jacket to enhance the luster and drape.

Preparation for Spinning:  A finger thickness of the strict was removed for the whole.  Holding this portion in the middle, it was brushed with a wool carder from center to end.  IT was turned over the other end was brushed thus removing any tow, tangles and breaking the linen down finer.   This portion was then spread on a terry towel lengthwise and the sides of the towel were folded over the linen.

Reason for Choice of this Sample: This was the best quality linen I was able to obtain.  Better quality once existed by I have not been able to obtain it.
