Sample #4
Fiber:  Wool
Weight of Skein:  60 grams

Appl: #1600203
Type: Suffolk
Length: 228 Yards

Spinning Equipment Used: Double Drive Flyer Driven Wheel, Ratio 4:1|
Direction of Twist:  Z
# of Plies: 1
Finishing:  The yarn was washed in hot water with Ivory liquid and dried on a yarn blocker then steam set with a hand held steamer.
Technique:  The yarn was spun using the British long draw method.
Uses: This yarn is a nice weight for crocheted sweaters (outer sweater) and has appropriate loft and bounce.  Strong enough for warp, fabric woven from this could be felted and brushed in a traditional British fashion for jackets ("boiled wool").

Preparation for Spinning: The wool was washed in very hot water with Ivory liquid. It was laid on a towel in the sun to dry and turned frequently.  The wool was picked by hand, carded on wool hand carders and made into rolags.  Care was taken to make sure an even amount of black hairs were throughout.

Reason for Choice of this Sample: This fleece was in the right range for length (3 to 4 inches), nice and crimpy with lots of bounce, relatively clean though could be cleaner, and sound.  This was the last sample I spun for the COE and would have preferred a slightly softer fleece, a little shorter and somewhat stronger.  I liked the interest of the black hairs interspersed in the fiber.
