Sample #13
Fiber:  Flax
Weight of Skein:  74 grams

Appl: #1600203
Type: Tow combed from strict
Length: 38 Yards

Spinning Equipment Used: Flyer Wheel, Ratio 16:1|
Direction of Twist:  S
# of Plies: 3
Finishing:  This yarn was washed in very hot, soapy water with much agitation.  The water was changed many times, it took a number of washings for the water to run clear when rinsing.  the yarn was reeled on a yarn blocker while still wet.  Extra moister was squeezed out between my fingers as it was reeled.  When it was dry it was removed from the blocker.  Even though it is still stiff, there is no sizing in the yarn.  It will become more supple as it is used in the future in a finished state..
Technique:  The fiber was spun dry with a short draw from handcarded batts.
Uses: Rugs woven with this small as warp might never wear out.   Heavy and strong, even a bond weave rug would endure.  Rustic placemats, runners and even upholstery could be made from this linen.  Remember its beauty comes with age and wear.

Preparation for Spinning:  I carded on wool combs smooth batts from the tow combed from the strict of samples 11 & 12.   The very shortest nips were removed.

Reason for Choice of this Sample:   This tow was far longer and superior to tow roving that is obtainable commercially thus achieving a stronger yarn.  Using this tow also prevented waste.
