Double Coin Knot

The polwarth sweater utilizes the simlest form of this knot.  In complex forms this knot becomres the medallion used for the Yak and Karakul rug.  The knot is most often tied using two or more stands of cord of different colors at once.

A.    Twist:  Like the clover leaf knot, this knot can be tied in either direction and Z or S twist is not critical.

B.    Density:  The double coin knot should never be tied too tight.   Therefore soft yarns are suitable as well as very dense cords.  Soft supple yarns will lay flat.  Hard, dense cords can be knotted into jewelry (see example).

C.    Fibers:  Most fibers are suitable for this knot but some more so.  Fuzzy fibers can be used if a strand of a smooth contrasting cord is used along side the knot to define the intersections.

D.    Textures: If the yarn is too thick and thin this knot will never look like it was tied correctly.  It will be acceptable if the yarn has a fuzzy texture.

E.    Wheel requirements:  Use any wheel suitable for the diameter and desired twist on the cord or yarn.
