Sample #5
Fiber:  Wool
Weight of Skein:  60 grams

Appl: #1600203
Type: Karakul (raw fleece)
Length: 36 Yards

Spinning Equipment Used: Flyer Wheel, Ratio 10:1|
Direction of Twist:  Z
# of Plies: 1
Finishing:  Washed, blocked and steam set with hand held steamer.
Technique:  The yarn was spun using the British long draw method (Mable Ross technique).
Uses:  This yarn is excellent for weft in tapestry for its texture and packing qualities.  Strong enough for rugs, it especially adds some texture to the weft.  It can be used for novelty weft in a heavy woven winter coat.

Preparation for Spinning:  Washed in very hot water with Ivory liquid.  Dried in a sunny window on towels.  The long smooth fibers were removed by woolcombing leaving short fiber behind.  These short fibers where then handcarded into rolags.

Reason for Choice of this Sample:   Using the same fleece for samples 5 & 6 allowed for no waste, complete compatibility in the final planned project and showed use of different techniques.   This shorter portion of the fleece was not suitable for woolcombing or worsted spinning yet spun easily into a strong even woolen.
