Finishing: Washed in warm water and steamed with hand held steamer
on yarn blocker. I do not boil my handspun cotton unless I intend to dye it (or if
it is green). Boiling removes the wax on the fiber that adds to durability and
softness. This I like to keep in the yarn. The first sample of this cotton I
spun and boiled--it turned out very white and very dead. I do not like to boil my
cotton!.
Technique: Short fiber lengths were pulled from the roving to open
the fiber up for drafting. Fanning the fiber with my thumb and index finger produced
an open, softly spun yarn. Just enough twist was added to hold it together and cut
down on abrasive qualities.
Uses: This cotton yarn is durable enough to be crocheted into a
ladies top--possibly in a lace pattern. It is also suitable for weft to make
placemats but I would prefer it woven into a simple top. Definitely weave in a
pattern with no floats!
Reason for Choice of this Sample: The creamy white was strong, fine, well prepared, inexpensive and easily obtainable.
