Surface
Design with Plant Dyes and Earth Pigments July 11-13,
2006, 9 a.m to 4 p.m. |

Create a rich, ecological, earthy palette of harmonious colors from nature. Flower tinctures, mud infusions and tannic/oxide discharge are just a few of the ancient methods you will learn. Unexpected surface effects can be coaxed from plant dye extracts that are not possible with other dyes. We will apply these colors to silks, cotton, and other natural substrates. The focus in this workshop will be on direct painting of the dyes, and effects from layering. We will explore mechanical and chemical resists, and burnish our cloth with a range of pigments and oxides gleaned from ancient color deposits from the earth. The final embellishment will be a range of metallic effects from mica and gold leaf.
