Clover Leaf Knot

This is a foundation knot for many complex knots and many projects.  The clover leaf knot can be tied tight with no "ears" (loops) or with large "ears".  The knot can be tied with two or more "ears".   Three "ears" are most common.

A. Twist: This knot has a tendency to untwist the plies on any cord you may spin.  Since the knot is tied in one direction in some patterns and another direction in other, it cannot be proven that a Z twist is superior to an S twist.   It is just important that there is a balanced twist.  If the yarn or cord is not balanced the clover leaf knot will not lay flat.

B. Density:This clover leaf knot does not have to be pulled very tight.  manipulation of the "ears" to the desired size is more important than how tight the knot is pulled.  Therefore, even soft spun yarns can look great in this knot.

C. Fibers: All fibers can be spun into cords and yarns suitable to be used for the clover leaf knot.  Even fuzzy yarns can show off well, just make the "ears" larger to define the finer points of this knot.  the center of the knot will be obscured with a fuzzy yarn but the "ears" are the main attraction of the knot.

D. Textures:Like all knots, even yarns are superior.  But textured yarns can be used when the clover leaf knot calls for large "ears".

E. Wheel Requirements: Use any wheel suitable for the diameter yarn desired.
