Sample #19
Fiber:  Silk
Weight of Skein:  65 grams

Appl: #1600203
Type: Bombyx Mori Bell
Length: 328 Yards

Spinning Equipment Used: Flyer Wheel
Direction of Twist:  Z
# of Plies: 1
Finishing:  The yarn was washed, blocked and steam set by hand held steamer.  The yarn stiffened when it is steamed but will relax more with handling.
Technique:  Very little manipulation was necessary in spinning from the well prepared sliver rolled in a ball.  A tight twist was added to keep the finished yarn from pilling.
Uses:  The yarn is strong enough for warp or weft.  After weaving and finishing the fabric it should drape lovely as a scarf or jacket fabric.   I would like to crochet it in household lace--a runner for my dinning room is what I have in mind.

Preparation for Spinning:   After the bells were dyed a layer of cocoons was peeled off the bell.  The center of the bell was pulled until a hole appeared forming a ring.  the ring was pulled and expanded slowly into a fine roving and wound into a ball.

Reason for Choice of this Sample: These bells are the most readily available of the expanded form of the cocoon.  Time did not allow for me to make my own mawata from cocoons.
